The book investigates the politics of education in pre- and post-genocide Rwanda, examining the actors, interests, and discourses that have historically influenced educational policy and practice and in particular the production and revision of history curricula and textbooks. This study combines a systematic historical and comparative analysis of curricula and textbooks in Rwanda, stakeholder interviews, classroom observations, and a large-scale investigation of pupils’ understandings of the country’s history. Written at a crucial time of transition in Rwanda, it illuminates the role of education as a powerful means of socialisation through which dominant discourses and related belief systems have been transmitted to the younger generations, thus moulding the nation. It outlines emergent challenges and possibilities, urging a move away from the use of history teaching to disseminate a conveniently selective official history towards practices that promote critical thinking and reflect the heterogeneity characteristic of Rwanda’s post-genocide society.

Described even today as "unsurpassed," this history of mathematical notation stretching back to the Babylonians and Egyptians is one of the most comprehensive written. In two impressive volumes, first published in 1928-9 and reproduced here under one cover, distinguished mathematician Florian Cajori shows the origin, evolution, and dissemination of each symbol and the competition it faced in its rise to popularity or fall into obscurity. Illustrated with more than a hundred diagrams and figures, this "mirror of past and present conditions in mathematics" will give students and historians a whole new appreciation for "1 + 1 = 2." Swiss-American author, educator, and mathematician FLORIAN CAJORI (1859-1930) was one of the world's most distinguished mathematical historians. Appointed to a specially created chair in the history of mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley, he also wrote An Introduction to the Theory of Equations, A History of Mathematical Notations, and The Chequered Career of Ferdinand Rudolph Hassler.

This collection of original articles and surveys, emerging from a 2011 conference in Bertinoro, Italy, addresses recent advances in linear and nonlinear aspects of the theory of partial differential equations (PDEs). Phase space analysis methods, also known as microlocal analysis, have continued to yield striking results over the past years and are now one of the main tools of investigation of PDEs. Their role in many applications to physics, including quantum and spectral theory, is equally important. Key topics addressed in this volume include: *general theory of pseudodifferential operators *Hardy-type inequalities *linear and non-linear hyperbolic equations and systems *Schrödinger equations *water-wave equations *Euler-Poisson systems *Navier-Stokes equations *heat and parabolic equations Various levels of graduate students, along with researchers in PDEs and related fields, will find this book to be an excellent resource.
